I don't like to use my stock horn in my Excursion, it sounds quite lame. My kids beg me to hit it because they get a laugh out of it. I did a lot of searching for an appropriate horn and found some sites that had true train and steam whistles. I had a lot of fun with the kids with the audio clips. I get a kick out of the yacht/big boat whistles, some have a ton of horns. I wanted a reasonably priced horn and was not sure if the electric air horns (uses air, built in compressor) sounded good enough. Do any of you out there have one of these horns? You know, like the dual red ones with a small compressor on ebay for about 20 bucks. I could just buy one of these verses convincing my wife that I need a real horn with a compressor so that I can inflate every pool toy and air mattress without getting dizzy (you know the speal).
At one point or another, I've had every major make of boat horn on my truck: Kahlenberg, Cunningham, Leslie, Kockums, AirChime. I highly recommend a 2nd hand set of Kahlenberg series 2 if you can find them. I've got a D-2 permanently over my cab, and it surprises the hell out of most people that ask me to toot it. It hits lower and with more punch than the hornblasters Buell set.

I want one too! Cool pic airraid. Who needs a stereo? Good thread though. I'd like to see the "cheap" $20 air horn question answered too. Are these worth the effort?

For a big truck, definitely not! Those little plastic horns are super high pitched like what they put on italian sports cars, or those spray-can air horns people have at ball games. They are a little louder but in many ways wimpier sounding that the stock electric horns (because of the squeaky high tone). The little pumps that drive them only put out 5-6 PSI, so they are no where near as loud as a proper air horn getting 100-125 PSI from a tank. If you're going to bother with air horns, you should get proper ones like Grover or Hadleys that use a small compressor with tank.
I installed 2 grover air horns on the frame rail right under the passenger front seat. the 2.5 gallon tank is mounted right behind them about under the rear seats also on the frame rail. The electric solenoid is on the tank and within 1 foot of the horns. They are very loud. I run the horns off of one of my upfitter switches so i still have my regular horn.
