Problems with ac and noise

03 V6 4.2 XLT 105,000 miles
When the truck is in drive and I turn on the AC/MAX AC options it starts making all kinds of noise (fast ticking) from under the hood. But when I put it on panel air or off it will go away. Putting the truck in park will make about 50% of the noise go away. It has been a gradual problem that used to be hardly noticable and now at drivethrus they cant hear what I'am saying. Any help would be great.

check your belt tensioner and belt.the belt might of stretched allowing the tensioner to hit the stop causing a noise.

might want to also check out your ac compressor clutch. It could be bad.Not sure if it would make a ticking noise. I had one go out on my last vehicle, but dont remember a ticking noise with it. One way to check if its fualty is to examine it(its on the front of the compressor sandwhiched between the pulley and the compressor). Mine was burnt up. you could see the burnt dust around it. when the ac was applied it would barely move as if it was hagning up
