engine wooes..........

Just got done with a great rebuild and now it won't idle. This is what I have and I'm not sure of the problem. Bored over .030 351c comp cam duration@.050 230 intake and 236 exhaust. MSD ignition complete w/ 6a box ,HV oil pump and lots more. First I was unsure if the cam would have change the firing order (13726548and 15426378 ). Jegs says there are two firing orders that ford uses. I was also told that depending on the cam, that it could change it as well. At this point I'm not sure if the timing is off, ( shouldn't be because it starts with little to no effort, a couple of pumps of the accelerator prior
to turning the key, (my firing order is wrong or the carb just isn't big enough (600 cfm edelbrock electric choke) or just not adjusted right. I plan to take it to a shop if i can't fix it with your help. It starts up good but just won't run on it's own. I don't have the mufflers on yet so it hard to listen for vaccum leaks. Plan on do that this weekend. I know my problem is probably small but when you don't really know where to start it can get frustrating. Any advise or prior experiences with this would help me out emensely. Where should I start with carb (adjustments) firing order(considering the cam) timing, and everything. Starting over from the top will probably help me narrow down my problem. I know this is maybe confusing but someone understands where I'm coming from and what I'm trying to ask. Thanks in advance.

First there is only one firing order for the 335 engine series. 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Make sure you have the right cam, a cam from a weezer will fit but will have excess clearance on a cam bearing or two.
Second, it sounds like a vacume leak to me but without being there I can't tell.

Could be. That's what I'm thinking but will not know until i get the ezhaust put on. The cam was recommened by the builder. A comp cam, not too radical so it shouldn't be the problem, hopefully not anyways. Thanks

Just set the carb up per Edelbrock's manual. A 600 CFM carb is fine for a 351C. Try to advance the timing a little, it might be slightly retarded.

What is the cam grind # from the timing card?
It should be a 32-XXX-XX for a 335 series motor.

Yes, that is the correct part #. A Windsor cam would have a 31-XXX-X or a 35-XXX-X part #.

If those cam duration numbers are at .050 lift you wont ever get a "good" idle. If they are advertised numbers then as mentioned look for vacuum leaks and intial timing.

Those are @ 0.050" lift durations. It is listed by Comp Cams as a Mid-range cam to be used with a 2200 stall converter.

It should idle, although it may have a lope.

Check for vacuum leaks.
Check your valve train geometry. Did you have your heads or deck milled? You may need shims or adjustable rockers.

I still think that's a lot of duration for a streetable set up in an auto. Do you have enough compression to support it?
