ok, i have a 1995 ford bronco with an E4OD tranny ( i know, i know) ...anyway, truck runs great...i get in one morning, and my overdrive light is flashing and my horn doesn't work...i check every single fuse and even replace the position 3 relay...I even replaced the MLPS and the VSS ...even thought i KNOW the horn has something to do with this, somehow...nothing doing....i've been calling a few tranny places and their telling me the tranny needs to be rebuilt!...it does not...this HAS something to do with the horn not working...is there anything anyone can offer before i go crazy and drive this thing into a brick wall? ....i love my truck....it's beautiful....black, complete bassani dual exhaust, K and N set up....immaculate...but this little problem is gonna be the death of me....any help, please
well, i'm going to run a scan on it tomorrow after work...if nothing comes up, then i'm going to check out the clockspring in the steering column...maybe even the ignition switch...we'll see what happens, tomorrow...i can't figure it out for the life of me, though
This is just a quick guess.....but what can you loose?
Do you think the clock spring thing under the steering wheel could be part of the issue......its the rotating contact point, and I think could cause your horn to quit...could be there is something boogered up in there thats causing the whole problem???
Like I said.....I aint no expert......other than that I would check for codes.
For a back-up plan......I would like to have a quality "trans only" shop in my pocket.....preferably a place that knows E4OD's like the back of their hand.
well, i don't know...we'll see if it turns up any codes...which i doubt is going to happen, considering the coincidental occurence between the horn and the overdrive light flashing...got to be a short, somewhere...and from what i've read on this forum, if it's not any of the fuses or relays it might just the the clockspring, or even ignition switch...i do know a few good tranny shops that i've dealt with and sold parts to in the past, so i'm not worried about that....but i really don't think the tranny is the culprit...this thing ran solid up until 2 days ago...
i think the horn and od light flash are two different issues. the wiring for the horn and od light arent the same so why would you think they are related. the od light flashed telling you it has stored a code. your horn not working is irrelevant at this time until you get the codes scanned
well, because they happened at exactly the same time...and from what I understand, even a short can cause a problem with a signal running to the tranny resulting in the o.d. light flashing...also, a number of people told me that running a scan might not even turn up a code...this has happened in the past, as previous posts reveal...i've also read that the clock spring holds the harnesses for both the horn and the o.d. activation...so, i don't know...i guess the only way to check would be to see if a scan revealed anything and go from there....and don't forget the number 3 fuse in the power distribution box under the hood controls the "horn" and the "speed control"...so something runs off the same circuit, somewhere...
....plus, i already changed the three things that might cause the tranny problem...MLPS, VSS in rear differential and TPS...so what else could it be if not any one of those sensors?...
I don't know enough to help you with this but after reading your problem I looked through my wiring diagrams and came up with this diagram which may be able to help you. It's for a 96 but I doubt its much different than yours. There were a few others diagrams that may be of interest to you but I think this one sums it up best.
wow, fishallot!...thanks!...that will be helpful when i disassemble the steering column to get at the clockspring...i know something is going on under there...very much appreciated!...thanks, again
ok, i got the clockspring out...but, anybody know what to look for if it's bad?
....pretty easy job, too....just in case anyone wants to know ....and thanks for the photos, streetgang!...always nice to have a reference....the link you posted was beneficial, also....thanks, again!
There is a ford factory recall out NOW for 95 thru 02 F series and Bronco for the speed sensor. Also when th OD light is flashing you should be able to get a DTC code when you scan the computer. HOPE this helps.
I guess that didn't work. I'm trying to find an easy way to show diagrams from my CD repair manual. This was a straight copy and paste. The only way I've come up with that somewhat works is to print out the diagram, take a picture of it, download pic to computer, upload from computer to hosting site and show the pic in a thread. It's alot of work for something that may not even help you out. If you determine it's an electrical problem and need a wiring diagram to help let me know and i'll be happy to get it on here for you. My manual has good diagrams of complete circuits, all connectors and splices in a circuit and descriptions of where every wire goes.
