I have a 1992 F250 with the 7.3 diesel, auto tranny and a 1356 BW transfer case. Last year I had a problem with a worn out lo/hi shift fork and needed to replace it. Last winter when I took it out in the snow and shifted using the manual floor shifter into 4 wheel drive Hi, it phisically went into 4 wheel drive Lo and while driving at about 30 mph slipped out of drive and into neutral. I just took it apart to see if the lo/hi gear is installed wrong, but it is placed so that the bottom gears go into the planetary gear. It looks correct by this parts layout http://www.drivetrain.com/bw1356transfercaseillust.htm .
I remember there was alao something with the 4x4 light not comming on in either 4x4 lo or 4x4 hi, but I can not remember for sure in which position what happened.
Can anyone think of any other reason I can have this problem?
I once found a page that had a nice detailed instruction on rebuilding these transfer cases, but I can no longer find this page. Does anyone know of any pages that show other detailed drawings or pictures of the inside of this transfer case?
Thanks.
Just shooting from the hip here, but did you put the shifter together correctly and positioned correctly? I went through my BW1345 and didn't mark the correct orientation of the cam shifter plate, and it wouldn't go into 4lo becuse there wasn't any swing left.
