bbfried, 99-02 trucks have never had trans temp gauges, only in 03' did that gauge appear in the SD, diesel or gas. If you plan to pull much of anything it's cheap Ins. The factory gauage is nothing more than a indacator. by the time it says to hot you've long fried your trany so your better of with an aftermarket gauge anyway. Personally I tow a gross load of 16-17k lbs (boat and camper together) with my 03 that has factory gauges currently but can garentee that by next spring I will have a real Trans Temp gauge, a real Oil Temp Gauge and a voltmeter (which was dropped to make room for the wrothless trans temp gauge). I figured I could do three gauges of good quality and the pod for less than $275, i figure thats pretty cheap Insurance considering a new trany would be over $2K.

I beg to differ I had a 02 with the tranny temp gauge and now have an 03 with one
But I do agree totally with the acuracy statement... They are nothing more than an idiot light. If you get the gauge to read in the read or close to it you may be in hot water. I would get an after market one if you are worried But with 8k I would say you should be safe with the factory set up. You can add external coolers and such if you feel the need..
Take care

I have a 2002 f-250 and it does have the trans temp guage but it goes up to half way and never goes any higher , load or no load , up hill or down hill , it doesn't go above half way . I just went camping with my friend who has a 2004 chevy and he said when he was pulling the hills with his trailer , his guage would rise on the hills , so i don't think the factory guage is very accurate on the ford .
My 02 also has the sorry excuse for a trans temp guage that Ford put in. I put in a new guage this summer just before a long trip to California. The stock needle went to mid point then never moved. The new one was at 140-160 from seattle to portland(90s), once I got into the mountains it was up to 170 around Sacramento I was at 175 and as I headed up towards Tahoe it hit 185-190. The stock guage never once budged! I wonder what the engine temps was doing. StevenG
Yup, tranny temp guage showed up in '02 - and maybe only with the tow package? I forget, but did notice the ones in the '02's on the lot and the lack of one on the '01 that now sits in my driveway
That, oil press and oil temp are probably the ones I'm going to put in a pillar pod... after the lease is up ...
