I bought my 97 F250 new and loved it. But the dealer did an update to the computer and screwed it up. I used to get 19 to 20 mpg empty and now I get maybe 15 to 16 mpg. My od shift points went from about 64mph to 59 mph. A 9000lb trailer I pulled never got below 14.5 mpg and pulled like a mule. Now it gets 7 mpg and I can't hardly hold 65 mph. I tried the Super chip and did 2 identical 120 mile trips the same day with the 9000lb trailer stock vs mod and had no change in power or milage. I then tried it without the trailer and programed to for hi performance and still no change. I asked the dealer to put it back the way it was and he said he couldn't because all the machine had was the new program. I asked him to reprogram it again to make sure it was done right but he said all the machine would do was say there was no new updates. Now I think I have glow plug problems because it wont hardley start without being plugged in even in 50 and 60 degree weather. Any ideas?
Was there a particular reason to have the PCM reprogrammed?
The tech is correct about not being able to go back to the old program, but I don't see why there would be such a drastic difference in power and mileage. Is there maybe some other problem?
I would think that except when all this happened it was only a year old and i put up with it for this long but now with the fuel prices i figured I better do something.
he just checked the the pcm as routine maintence for me since I had the truck there for the recall. No problems until then and when I complained he said he hadn't had any other complaints.

yes it has. I have been reading up on it and talking to people for quite some time now but it makes me mad to have to put more money in to it to get it back to the way it was before the update was done. It just aint right. I was happy with it the way it was originally and it still ran good, it just didnt have the poop it used to and not as good of milage.
The oil gets change every 3 to 4 thousand miles. I changed the relay about 6 months ago and also the batteries on the dealers recomondation and the starting problem keeps getting worse and with winter comming I decided to put in the shop and change the glow plugs. I'm not used to paying shops to do my mechanic work but I have no way to read the computer very well. It used to start at 10 below with only cycling the plugs 2 maybe 3 times without being plugged in. Not now.
I talked to one guy that sells the programers and he was the one that thought that maybe the pcm didnt get flashed correctly and to try to have it redone. And like i said i didnt think i should have to pay 4 or 5 hundred dollars to get it back to where it was originaly. And I kind of wanted to keep it stock in case I decided to get rid of it sometime but I cant handle the milage anymore.
