Redundancy is usually a good thing - we need to hear something 7 times before it starts to sink in......at least I think I heard that once......
Production code is the day, month and vehicle produced. Are you sure you got it right? There should only be one letter.......
2 is the day
H is August '53
I use Cars & Parts Magazine's "Catalog of Ford Truck ID Numbers, 1946-1972"

Production and serial number differences? From what I've seen, serial number is arbitrarily designated by Ford for overall production in all plants. Production number is a more accurate count of vehicles produced in a particular plant. Likely the string of numbers began back in the summer of '52 when the new model ('53) trucks hit the line.
On the other hand I could be all wet - Ford has more exceptions than rules.

Lessee, Kevin got the VIN decoded.
The Consecutive Unit Number of 53,500 means that your truck was the 43,500th truck produced that year. The number started with 10,001 instead of 1 - don't know why that is. Maybe they wanted to make their production numbers appear larger than they were? There were some 115,000 light trucks of all types produced by Ford in 1954.
Tim got the production code date for you. I haven't been able to find a definitive explanation of what the numbers/letters after the date values in the production code mean. One source says that part of the production code is supposed to be the district code where the truck was ordered or produced - whatever that means. On my truck, the production code is 12L-1262P-32. The 12L means it was produced on the 12th or November, I have no idea what the 1262P means, and the 31 supposedly is the district code for the Cincinnati District. Folks have posted their production codes a number of times and there seem to be many different formats. I think Tim is probably close to the truth - the production code was some number put on the truck that meant something at a particular plant. I doubt you can come up with a rule that would let you decipher any production code from any plant.
The DSO is the Domestic Special Order code. If yours is blank or asterisks (***), it means it did not have any special order code. DSOs were used to designate fleet vehicles with custom colors, special orders for military trucks, etc.
As far as a book goes, I got a copy of "Standard Catalog of Light-Duty Ford Trucks" by John Gunnell on the recommendation of folks here on the forum. My edition has interesting information like production numbers, etc. for every year from 1905 through 2002.
