4.6 vs 5.4

I have a friend with a 2002 F150 and I want to know if it has the 4.6 or the 5.4. It is a 02 F150 SuperCrew XLT. I dont know if you would be able to tell me by just that info, I dont know if the 5.4 was available in the XLT or just the lariat.

If the 5.4 was availible in the XLT could you tell me any ways I could tell what engine it is, besides opening the hood.

I don't think that there is a way to tell just from looking at the outside of the truck.

OK so that means the 5.4 was available in the XLT? I guess we'll just have to look under the hood sometime.

Yes there is a way, The 5.4 and 4.6 have different sized rear end housings with the 5.4s being larger resembling the one in the superduty.

Is there some problem with opening the hood and looking?

Bingo! The Plastic cover over the throttle body (if it is there) is an indicator.

I'm sorry, I thought you were trying to tell just by the exterior.

The problem many of us are having it seems is with the concept of the question.
If the friend has this truck, why is it neccessary to ID the engine only from the exterior?

Why not just ask your friend? I mean, he should know what engine his OWN truck has.
If not, like was said before, just look under the hood and it will have a piece of plastic thats on the top of the motor that with say in big letter either "4.6L" or "5.4L".
