Smile coolant lines

i was under my truck last night doing the oil and grease job, and i noticed the bottom radiator hose has a double t in it with 2 lines going back towards the tranny/transfer case. what the heck are these for? betcha autozone wants a pretty penny for the bottom hose!

Those lines run back to the oil filter flange (I don't know the correct terminology for that hunk of metal the oil filter attaches to..)

It acts as a motor oil cooler of sorts. I've only seen it on my truck, and no other make of vehicle so far (do the 5.4's have it considering the V10 is a mod motor?)

thanks guys. i would have thought it would be more efficient to cool it from in front of the radiator where there is cool airflow.
