Running Rich

I just put a point type distributor in my 86 dont ask me why i did that my cousin is a mechanic and he said it would be easer because we only use it around the farm. But we got the distributor from a 73 and put it in the 86. He put it in about a week ago and the coil hooked up. We got it timed by ear. Now when you start it up it is running way rich would i need a eariler carb to go along with that distributor? Or is there any way to get this one from running rich?

Thanks Guys

SO its easier to change points than a rotor and cap?

Im thoroughly confused....

An 86 is a TFI setup, and the dizzy is an integral part of that, your screwing the computer up, what kind of mechanic is this guy?

Your 86 should have a electronicly controled carb,( probably has a bunch of wires goung into it somwhere.) The carb needs to "talk" to the distributor, and because it cannot it probably plays it safe and runs rich rather than lean,

But to answer your question, yes an earlier carb would fix the problem.
you probably can't get that carb from the '86 to run right without the electronic distributor. I think carbs up to '80 or '81(thats what Im running in my '67), are non-electronic and will work with your points.

Some Carbs from 3/4 and 1ton trucks may have non electronic carbs throughout the 80s because they are emmisions exempt, these carbs will work fine too.

Basicly any carb from a 300 that doesn't have electronics will work, or put the correct distributor back in the '86.

I would go for the cheapest solition, but I like the idea of non-electronic for a farm truck.
