My 7.3 runs perfect, for about 30 seconds!! Then stalls and if I wait 4 or 5 minutes it will start right up and run perfect for another 30 seconds. This can go on all day long. First thing I did was replace the already nearly new fuel filter....nope....then the timing sync.....nope. So now about $200.00 later, I sure hope someone here has a clue for me. I did a simple search for this problem and did not see it. I need this truck for work today and figured I would make my first post even though the topic may be here somewhere.
Having done a little more looking I see that there is also a cam sensor. Where is it located in relation to the timing sync.? I am kinda old and only have 1 eye and had quite a struggle laying in the rocks to replace the sync. But if I got that done, am I capable of doing the cam sensor too? If and when someone tells me where to look. It is a '99, 7.3 we are dealing with here.
Oh well. Things are getting worse. Just started it and it only ran for about 5 seconds, and now the service engine soon light stays on and it will not restart. Apparently that thingamajig I bought from Ford and says syncronizer on the plastic bag is the cam sensor. I am stuck out here in the middle of nowhere and have to hitchhike to the parts store. Being the optimist that I am I figured that if I slept on it, all would be well in the morning....Yeah, right!
Is the cam sensor the only thing that will cause the tach not to operate while cranking the engine? If so, that would mean that my brand new sensor from Ford is faulty....right? Must be too early in the morning for most of us, cause no matter how desperate I am here, I can not get any immediate help.
Yes it sounds like you have a bad crank sensor.
Yes a new one could be bad (rare)
Most likely your batteries are too weak at this point to get the needed cranking speed for the 7.3L.
Step back put you battery charger on and grab a cold one. While the batteries juice up check the sensor conector to make sure the end did not gety full of dirt and oil when you did the swap.
$400.00 for towing, 2 fuel filters, cam sensor and a Ford garage that found the problem was as simple as my Superchip had gone bad. Oh well, sure hope they stand behind it. They are lifetime, are they not? What a difference going back to the OEM chip makes. Not for the better either.
i dont know if you have a idle control sensor but my 5.4 was doing the same thing it would only stay running if i put my foot on the gas and i know you have a 7.3.
My Superchip went bad in my '96 t-bird and they were happy to send me a new one, took a week or so for the turn-around, but I got a newer program out of it anyway.
Got the truck I love back!! Put my replacement Superchip back in....wow again. Fairly quick turnaround from the company and very good customer service. The difference from stock is so unbeliveable it is amazing.
