i was doing an oil change today and noticed that i'm leaking trans fluid. there isn't any around the trans pan but by the yoke, where the trans and driveshaft connect. is there a seal that may have gone bad. i've really never seen a leak there and i don't have alot of experience in this area. it is my 2wd 3.0 auto. i bought this one used with only about 43k on it and i got a warranty with it but was just currious what it may be. thanks!
I got the same leak, rear right where the rear main seal is on my truck. Everyone's suggestion is clean it up really nice, and see where exactly the leak is coming from. Probably and hopefully just those stupid little plugs up top. Nothing big if that's it, probably should go ahead and flush it anyways though, simple and you can do it!
There is a tranny output seal there. Clean it up real good with some brake clean, and drive it for a couple days. Then, you'll be able to see for sure if it's leaking past the seal. Another place it could leak from is the breather. If it's been overfilled, overheated, or both, ATF will come out the breather. Either way, it's not a big deal as long as the fluid is at the proper level.
I have a manual trans and it sometimes is a little wet with maybe a drop of fluid. I noticed it one day and cleaned it but havent seen a drop since. I think it's just a little seepage from getting hot. My rear axle did the same thing, it leaked a few drop after driving 250 miles across the 110 degree desert and i cleaned it and it hasn't leaked since. I think it's just a freak thing. If you can see little dots on your drivway from where you park everyday then i would address it, otherwise i'd forget about it.
thanks guys. unfortunately for me, the fluid level is down. the manual says my auto for a 3.0 holds 10 quarts and the dip-stick is showing just under the criss-cross marks. under the truck there is fluid on the tranny itself and floor-pans, like when the driveshaft and joint are rotating, its whipping the fluid.
