I have run a 400W Zantec inverter for about 3 years with no problems. Normally run a 13" TV/VCR unit for the kids in the back seat ever since the DC pare of the AC/DC TV/VCR quit. No plug overheating issues ever. The inverter does get a bit warm to the touch after several hours.
In addition, I have installed a 1750W Zantec inverter in my RV. Used a 300 amp fuse approx 12" from the battery bank and 4/0 wire for a 6' run to and from inverter. Inverter installed in a DRY location per the instruction manual. I have 450 watts (26 amps @ 17 volts) of Solar panels on top of the RV, and a Honda 2000i knock off generator in cas of many rain days. Unit powers everything but the AC. Onlyissue is I need a bigger battery bank as the batteries spend much of their time fully charged during the day, but get drained to <50% by morning.

Depends on the quality/condition of the cig lighter. Ford cautions not to use the cig lighter in the newer F250's; use instead the "auxiliary power point" connector for powering external loads. And I think it's fused at 20 A. (Someone will correct me if that's wrong, my manual is out in the truck). But. trust me, I've seen the cig lighter sockets smoked more than once. Look at the wire on it - usually # 14, at the most #12. Long way from the # 8 or better needed for the 400 w inverter. My guess is you're probably not pulling a full 400 w for any length of time.
