not all the time, but my truck has a humming noise usaully when i push the brake pedal it gets louder. its sounds like it is under the dash behind the brake pedal. any ideas? the truck is a 2001 f250 4x4
does it also wine when you turn the wheel? if so it is the powersteering pump. it will make noise with your brakes to because the pump is also the brake booster
Mine is sounding the same as yours.. let me know if you find the problem.. Mine usual gets alot quieter after it warms up and is driven afew miles.. I have tried to bleed the air out, as some people suggest by turning the wheels from side to side but it does not help..

do i bleed the brakes, or do i have to replace the pump? is it normal? it is a off and on kind of thing. it isnt all the time but i also dont need to loose brakes pulling a trailer.
well i guess il just leave it as is and keep an eye on it, thanks for the help, as usual this place and the people have proved to be a big help on my peace of mind and wallet since now i come here before i go do the dealership to charge me to answer questions.
I just test-drove a 99 f250 SC/PSD 2wd auto and experienced the same sensation in the brake pedal along with a transmission whine that increased with engine rpm OR brake pedal pressure no matter what speed...even in park!!
I had a very similar situation and all I had to do was ad some powersteering fluid and it went away. It looked like the cap had come loose and I lost a bit of fluid.

Has anyone identified the source of the noise?
It is your steering pump doing the whinning.. the pump also supplies oil (ATF fluid) to the power brake unit, so that is why when you press on the brake, it will whin more.. I just replaced my steering pump. Had the same problem on my 99. It eliminated all but 10% of the whin.. The instructions with the rebuilt pump says it will need about 500 miles of break-in to quiet the noise.. It probably air in the lines and it takes awhile for it to bleed out completely..
