Line X vs. Bedliner spray

I'm looking at spray coating my bed since it's not straight enough to have a nice paint put on. I checked with Line X coating. They want $450 to spray a coating on the bed. They say it fades after a year or so, and you can't take the fender bolts out once it's sprayed. The bedlining spray can is about $7.00 a can and would probably take a good 4-5 cans to do a bed. Anybody have pros or cons on either bed coating process?

I used the Herculiner Bed Kit that rolls on with the provided roller. I scuffed the bedsides with scotchbrite and applied two coats. I masked off the top edges and anywhere else as needed. It went on easily and so far is keeping its appearance (2 months). You have to stir often to keep the particles suspended while applying. The fender bolts could be a problem but I think with the Herculiner it could be touched up if necessary. I checked into the LineX but felt it was overpriced for just doing the insides of the bed area. I also felt the spray-on would be more difficult to control without alot of masking and I was concerned about the application being "even" in appearance. I did it before installing the bed wood.

I used the spraycan stuff under my cab once I finished my patches. I had no problems and liked the way it covered. If you do get too much on you can quickly wipe it off with a rag.

I considered rolling Herculiner on, but nowhere on the can did it state and nobody in the store knew if you could paint over it. I waited a couple of days for the spray stuff to dry, and then sprayed it with the paint I am using for the cab.

It took two cans to do a thick coat on the bottom of the cab.

Looks nice - I will do the box the same way.

With Herculiner you can come back later add another coat or fix if it gets messed up.Some of the others it wont stick to the first application. I'm thinking about using a marine non skid that has ground up rubber in it.I used it in my last boat.Just cant think of the name right now.It will take a lot of abuse.

The spray can stuff says you can repaint as needed after the initial drying time, but it does need to be clean - (I used it as undercoating). My main worry is rust protection - mine is a working truck that will be used in all sorts of weather.

I removed, replaced, or treated all the rust I could, but still worry about it.

In my box I am using an enamel paint, and will apply rust treatment before I spread anything. The floor and sides are battered, and I will not try fixing that. My idea is that the coating will cover these sins, plus I intend to run a cover. I do want it painted white.

Mad, sorry but I did not understand what you are saying -

I applied Herculiner on my running boards, firewall, and under the hood and cab about two months ago. Watch out for the foam rollers included in the kit, after a while they will fall apart and all the foam will wind up in the coating. I called and e-mailed them about the problem and they never responded. Overall the coating has worked out well it sure made my cab interior quiet. I ruined a starter because I couldn't hear the engine running and thought it had died. I noticed within the last couple days the area of the running boards exposed to the sun has faded, the part under the cab out of the direct sun light is still glossy.

I was at WalMart today and notice they had DuraColor bedlining there. Didn't have the herculiner. It came in a gallon can which was $39 and the roller kit was $10. It looked like the same stuff? I think herculiner has the rubber in it versus Dura Color does not. I'm looking for the herculiner kit. Since I'm not doing the floor or back tailgate, I may be able to get away with a couple of quarts versus bying the whole gallon can? I'm filling in some of the rough spots with bondo and then I'll be putting the herculiner on. Let you guys know how it works out.

Pep Boys carries Herculiner also. $50 for a gallon kit that includes the roller kit. Yes, Herculiner has the rubber particles in it.

The shop I work at installs the spray in bedliners, Speedliner Brand, and i tinted mine to match the paint, however it does not hold a silver content as well so it will be darker. But I have had to completely strip beds with herculiner and speedliner, among other brands, and completely re-do them, just b/c those were not prepped properly before the other ppl sprayed them. Anything will stick good so long as your prep work is done right, spend a lil extra time prepping the surface and even the spray-can stuff will work too, but I would recomend using Speedliner..lol...its the best..just cuz I install it.
