Hot Floor

I have a 1973 F100 Custom. Nothing fancy, just the factory rubber floor mats, no carpet. My problem is that the floorboard gets is hot that you have to wear good shoes or your feet will burn.

Does anyone know how I can insulate the pickup to cut down on that heat?

If your mufflers are under the cab you might add factory style heat shields. There are lots of insulaters you could put on the floor but most would probably need to be covered with carpet. Maybe thick spray on bed liner with the mats.

Jim,
They make a firewall liner that can reduce heat transfer through the floor. Call autokrafters.com.
Otherwise a radiant heat shield is the way to go. This is simply attained by taking a piece of sheet metal and placing it between the surface of transfer (floor board) and the object emmitting the heat energy (muffler). If you bend the shield you can direct the energy away from areas of concern.
Good luck,

hey Jim are you running an automatic? the reason I ask this is because the floor shouldn't be that warm. I had a C-6 in a '75 F-250 that was ok and one day it started building heat like you described on the floor (VERY HOT). it even had a extra tranny cooler on it. about a week went by and it exploded! not sure what happend but it worked fine right up to that point. anyway you might want to check out that trans and see if its the cause of the heat. if its a four speed disregard this post as those old iron beasts don't make much heat. you can still insulate but be sure that its not more than just exaust heat. just some food for thought.

I do have a C6, but it was overhauled about 1,000 miles ago. I have recently installed my new hot rod engine (hot cam, aluminum intake, edelbrock carb, headers, etc.) and suspected the mufflers were under the cab. (I haven't laid eyes on it since I live in TX and my brother installed the engine in OK.) I remember it getting very hot with the old 390 so I don't think anything has changed. I called my brother tonight and he is going to crawl under it tomorrow and see where the mufflers are in relation to the cab - but I still think it will not solve anything since it was hot before the new engine.

As soon as he gets it to me I think I'll try the heat shield with aluminum from the hardware store.

BTW, he says it has so much power that he is going to change his plans. He was going to put it on a tow dolly and pull it behind his 32' motorhome. Now he's thinking about pulling the motorhome behind the pickup.

Mom always said that boy ain't right.
