I don't know on the newer trucks but my 97 F-150 Lariat with 4.6 auto gets an average of 16 to 18 in regular driving. I can get 21 to 22 on the interstate with it.
I have a 2000 scab 4x4 with a 4.6 I get about 17 city and highway. what kind of mileage are you getting on the ranger, is it a 4x4. I was thinking about going down in size.
I have a 2000 4.6L, auto, 2wd, long bed. If I keep the RPM's below 2k then I'll get around 18 - high 19's with about 85% city driving. If I get on it which I occasionally due then it obviously drops some. I have been told that these trucks have a computer in them that learns the way you drive and adjusts accordingly for the best fuel mileage. I know when I first started trying to keep it below 2000 RPM's the truck was sluggish and the mileage was closer to 15. After a couple months I noticed that the mileage was up there and it seemed to get going better. Maybe I just got used to it or maybe the computer actually did something...
getting about 17 on average, combined city/highway with soft bed cover, the newer 3 valves have more power, which it needs (4.6) in a 2 wheel drive it would prolly be fine.
I get about 15-16 with about half highway and half city. But then again i got 305/70/r16 (33x12.50) pro comp x-terrains, so it's down from what it used to be, but only slightly.
Are you guys really checking miles driven divided by gallons used?
I've had (2) '97 Supercab 4x4's, and neither got any better than 14 around town and 17 on the highway. And I don't just guess by how fast the guage drops, I actually do the math.
Anyway, I WISH I got 16-17 around town, but I don't. Maybe because it's hilly around me?
The GOOD thing I can report is that my current '97 has 254K + on the clock, and it still runs like new. Original EVERYTHING, except starter, shocks, brakes, etc. Oh, yeah, I also replaced ball joints and control arms, and plug wires and coils. But that engine refuses to quit.
I always check mine by the milage against gallons. when I fill up I turn the trip odometer to 0. I do that on all my vehicles its a good indication when you are starting to have engine problems or need a tune up.
But yea I get 17 in city and 14 in city when the snow was on the ground and I had it in 4 Hi, recently.
The 4.6l v8 is a great engine. Has cast iron block, SOHC, 2 valves/cylinder, fuel injection, 4 bolt mains. I think it has aluminum heads. Mine has been very reliable. As long as you change oil/filter every 3k miles and fuel filter, it will last eons. I get about 17-18 city and 20-21 hwy.....
