New Truck... Steering question?

Been a while since I posted but I just bought this 74 F-100 and it is needing some work.

My main concern is getting it mechanically sound and I am unsure if the steering is the way it should be. What I mean is that it is not very easy to turn the wheel yet it doesnt feel like manual steering either.

There is fluid in the steering pump and the belt is secure and in good condition. I have drivin plenty of old vehicles and the steering is usually very easy to move but this one is a little tough and was wondering how everyone elses was.

Its a 390 auto incase that matters.

Thanks!
Steve

Sorry about that. Its a 2wd with standard 15" wheels and tires on it.

Also everything is stock, to my knowledge.

it could be you have a weak power steering pump,or contaminated fliud that is causing a partial blockage in the lines.i would ckeck your belts arent loose or slipping, flush the system out, replace the fluid, check for leaks in the system, then make sure you dont have air in the system.if you still have problems ,then start to look at replacing components.-billy

Jack up the front so that both wheels are off the ground. Support the truck on jack stands. Try the steering, you should be able to push the tire with your hands easily through the whole steering travel. If not you most likely have siezed king pins. You can try and grease them. Sometimes a LITTLE heat will free up the old grease and allow new grease in to lubricate things. If this works it will buy you a few months but chances are that you will be doing king pins eventually.
Good luck

I've had very good luck freeing them up by jacking them up using the heat and using synthetic grease, usually have to do it a second time a week or so down the line, but I haven't had any seize again. Don't be afraid to run a load of grease threw it while it's hot, then when it cools do your final grease job.
