i am looking at a 1996 f150 for my son, 4.9 six reg cab 4-overdrv tranny. the truck is in great shape but no 1st an 2nd gear. 3rd, 4th, od and reverse work fine. anyone ever run into this problem. i am thinking it is a broken roll pin or detent spring or fork. not really a big job to fix and getting it for a excellent price.
thanks
ok, got the truck home, pulled the top and found that the 1st and 2nd gear shift fork worn down to like a razor thin strip. then found a complete top set up on ebay and got it for 34.oo. a couple days and it will be runnig down the road again on all 5speeds. not bad for a grand.
My '96 has a similar problem. After spending 3 weeks or more planning what to do, even selling, I took the top off and found the 1-2 shift fork worn all the way through. The 3-4 fork not to bad. Now I need new forks. Wish I could change a couple of gear ratios while its open. I found a lot of metal in that plastic tray thing. Stuck a magnetic pickup tool in and pulled it out with all kinds of neet looking stuff on it. I'll try to find some replacement plugs too. Boy that sure beats pulling it out.
Anybody got a good fork?? There over a big $100 bill from ford.
My 1-2 shift fork is worn down to nothing also. I have a new fork but I'm not quite exactly sure how to get the rod out to replace the fork. I pulled the rubber plug and tried to hammer the rod out but it barely budged. Is there some sort of trick to it?
first you have to remove the roll pin that goes though the fork, it just barely clears the 3rd and 4th fork. once the pin is out you have to push the rod out though the case where you removed the rubber plug. you have to overcome the spring loaded detent and dont remove the rod completely. once the rod is free from the fork wiggle it out and then wiggle the new one back in, push the shift rod back in, reinstall the roll pin and your done with the change.
