Engine code "A" & "B" on VINs...

Engine code "A" & "B" on VINs...
I found a few VIN engine codes I couldn't decipher. A & C...is one of them for a 240? Anyone have a clude? I believe they're older and may be in the pre'73 family. I thought the codes stayed consistent from year to year.
