I was outside doing yard work today and found a spider on an old wood ladder that I was throwing away. The thing could have bit me because I didn't even notice it until I put the ladder in the truck. Anyway, it is black with a long deep red stipe down its abdomen (from what I gather this is called a cardiac mark). Around that red stripe is a pattern of smaller tan stripes that look like they are spreading out away from the red mark. Full spread it is a little larger than a nickle.
From all the pictures I have looked at it appears to be a Red Back spider, but the web (internet) says they are common in Australia. Any chance that they could be found in a backyard in Albuquerque?
I'm not a spider guru, I found that site when we were looking for info on Bananna spiders since they're all over the place out here in the forest. Amazing critters to watch. I find is funny that the females are the bigger spider and the ones that actually do the work. Guess the guys are only around for one thing.
yeah sounds like a black widow. scroll 3/4 way down on that link from Carlene. it's on the left. red hourglass shaped red sopt on the underneather side.
from what you descrided it looks just like the "black widow" on that link, however we have black widows where i live and every one i have seen has been solid black with a red "hour glass" shaped mark on its under side and thats it. http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/en.../blackwid.html

Thats exactly what every black widow I have ever seen looks like. I've never seen one that looks like this. Sure glad it didn't bite me. From these links it sounds like I'd be in the hospital right now.
The only thing I am sure of about spiders is, the web spinners are engineering marvels in themselves. Can we even imagine swinging from point to point all night with a thread slithering out of our butt, and by morning having built a web that is geometrically mindboggling, awesome in design , and almost perfect in its parallel dimensions??

having trouble with just the thread out of butt thing. thanks for THAT visual!
I have that exact same spider here in Montana....ALL OVER!!! Red hourglass on abdomen but ALSO the red stripe down the back with tan borders. I HATE spiders to begin with, but lately I have become pretty lax around them as they're all over. I have never seen that type of black widow spider until I moved to the spot I am now....they've always been solid black with the hourglass only.
BTW..here's another spider question. I have this type of spider that looks exactly the same as a BW, but no markings. Solid black and shiny......only the size of a silver dollar. They're HUGE and really scary looking. Thanks.
