hi i am getting new spark plug wires and plugs and was wondering whcih spark plugs are best for my factory 400, please include number and brand i want preety good ones that will give me a little more power. thanks kevin
I am sure you will hear about plugs with tripple electrodes or platinum/titanium/iridium but I use good old Autolites. Just the plain 99 cent copper core Autolite plugs. They work better than any other plug I have run.
I imagine you'll get plenty of opinions on this one. I've got a buddy who swears no vehicle of his will ever use anything but those new plus 4 plugs with the four prongs. I'm currently using the Autolites. Put em in day before yesterday. Replaced the splitfires the previous owner had in there. Granted, the new wires, coil, cap, and rotor may also have a little to do with it, but my truck runs a helluva lot smoother, has a lot more get up and go, and starts much easier than it did before.
Another buddy of mine put it like this:
If you figure the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars the NASCAR, NHRA, IHRA, Formula One, etc. teams put into researching, building, and maintaining their motors . . . cars, trucks, cycles, go karts, lawn tractors, all of the things we can race . . . then look at what they use. Most, if not all, just use good old fasioned Autolites or Champions or Bosch. Vipers cost what, about $65,000? Dodge uses regular old, run of the mill, buy them at the part store spark plugs. If it's good enough for all of them, it's probably going to be fine for me.
That said, I plan to try some of those plus 4s myself eventually, just to see if they are as great as my other buddy thinks.
I say the good old autolites they have a good warranty. Buy them from a good reputable parts store and take them back once a year or as needed. Thats what I do but hey I know the guys there.
MSD Pro-Billet Distributer, MSD High vibration coil, an MSD offroad racing ingnition, Ford Racing 9mm cables, and good ol' autolites. Maybe I'll change plugs when NAPA stops supplying replacements every year for a very very absent price. I guess I don't get the whole multiple prong / V shape prong hype.
I have used Autolites for years and I replace them at about 40,000 miles and they are still in decent shape. I usually give them to the kids who regap them and clean them up and put them in their cars.
