I just charged my 73 factory A/C w/ 3 cans of R134 after replacing seals and cleaning out the lines and compressor. It was about 95 deg today and the truck was putting out 54 to 56 deg at best. This was sitting in the driveway without direct sunlight. The temp at the top of the rad went from the normal 180~190 to 216.
I was running a hot straight to the compressor, so it wasn't the adjustable temp switch, and the blend door was shut and the hot water control was closed. I also used a vac pump before adding the oil/R134.
I tested another car I did a R134 conversion on and got it down to about 38~42 deg.
I know that some cars/trucks are known to have 'weak' A/C systems but I don't know if this is true with Fords.
I can't seem to find the book, does anyone know how much R134 is these systems take?
kjay , my system (on my f250, 77) took abt two and 1\2 cans of r134---I didn't do the work , but the mechanic replaced a seal and a bearing(compressor) I believe and he said you have to have a different "dryer" for 134 than for r12---it really works great so far....fd :-X11
