My 1976 F-150 (300 6 cyl) has started ticking and it does not go away, even after it is warmed up. It is definitely coming from the head, but is it the valves or the lifters? Is there any way to adjust valve lash and would this help anyway? Gotta replace the valve cover gasket so I thought it would be a good time to investigate this little noise. Thanks...
How is your oil pressure? The 300's were bad about not oiling the upper end when the oil pressure got low. When you take the valve cover off, put some rags around the top of the head and start the engine. If oil goes everywhere, you don't have an oiling problem. If not, check each rocker arm and see if oil is seeping out the top. If not you might be able to put in a high volume pump and cure it for a while.
The lifters are pretty easy to adjust if you have good oil flow. But if its real loud its probably a bad lifter. Luckily lifters are a snap to change on a 300 anyway and dont cost much either. Let us know how you make out when the valve covers off. If the engine is really slugged up I've had great luck running marvel mystery oil to free up stuck lifters.
I'm no mechanic but I have a friend who had a 300 6 that knocked and "ticked" for over a year before he finally threw a rod out the bottom of the engine one day going to college (he's in auto tech.) I have had 2 300 6's and one of them ticked constantly and I was told it was the wrist pins. That one would still run if I put a new egr valve and carb on it but it would still tick until finally it blew up too I imagine. The other 300 6 just got brand new timing gears and was wrecked. (The engine is still good, all it needs are body pieces and a radiator and fan.) That one clicked very quietly and turns out, a spark plug was very loose. (I don't know how but that's what we found and as soon as we tightened it, it quit. Doesn't make any sense to me.) I kinda think that what they have said is probably a closer to right but since I was told wristpins so long, maybe you might want to see if anyone knows anything about that being the problem. Just a suggestion (and I hope that's not the case!)
