Ok. Here's a question. My 79 has a 302 in it. I let my dad take it to drive so he could help me with payments and gas and I could take my sister's car and help him find all the problems with it and fix them becuz I have more time to work on them than he does and my sis is about to go to Pheonix for school so we've got to get her car fixed. Dad got the vaccuum lines hooked up and it started missing. It's not an all the time thing either. He changed the spark plugs and it quite for a little while but it started up again. He wants to run a compression test on it (and I don't understand what that has to do with it missing but...that's dad for you). I think that maybe the plug wires need to be changed. The ones on there have a swollen spot becuz they got soaked in oil at some point in time before we got it. Any clues as to what could be causing the miss? I've looked at the inside of the distributer and it looks good and the wires are connected good and everything looks clean and in good shape.
Also, on the driver side valve cover the oil filler cap has a pcv valve in it with hose running to a shutoff and then running to the bottom of the carb or whereever. Is that shutoff valve supposed to be there and does it serve any real purpose? Dad said something about maybe it's for some kind of test that you could do and maybe that was a requirement of it. Not like any test I've ever heard of but then, I'm still learning. It's leaking oil onto the top of my valve cover and intake and making a generally annoying film. It's not bad and it's not enough to make it run but in west TX it's enough to collect dirt. If it's no big deal, I was thinking about just pulling it out of the line and running a straight line to where it's supposed to be. I can't even tell if the shutoff is on or off. Any suggestions?
Thanx!!!!!

the 302 in my 76 has the PCV plumbed directly to the base of the carb. I think the cutoff might be something someone else put on there, not sure. But it will cause no harm to run it directly to where it needs to go, as mine runs fine with it set up the way it is
On the part about it missing. If your wires are soaked in oil then the spark is probably jumping out of your wire onto something it is touching or near. Replace them. Becarefull working around them with the vehicle running, they bite.

Hey thanx! I wouldn't have thought of the oil allowing the spark to jump. Well, we replaced the plug wires this saturday and that did fix the missing problem.
I think I will go ahead and pull that shutoff valve off becuz all it's doing is letting oil leak. Is oil even supposed to be getting into that line that goes to the bottom of the carb? For some reason that seems odd to me but hey, what do I know? Thanx lots guys!

Another thing you might want to check is the carb settings. Make sure it is tuned right. And make sure you keep that PCV. In fact, if you can, run it from the other valve cover and tee it into the other line. You won't believe how many oil leaks that will fix. Pressure builds up in the crankcase and if you don't ventilate it (Positive Crankcase Ventilation - PCV) then it will find a weak spot in the gasket. Also, those gases are blowby aka unburned fuel. If you run it back to the carb you are reducing emissions and, more importantly, increasing fuel efficiency. I have heard that if you don't run PCV in a new engine then you can really reduce it's life. Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in.
Hey! All very good ideas. Thanx! About the PVC stuff. There's one on both valve covers. One runs to a little filter attatched to the inside of the breather. That filter is clean. The other one is in the filler cap on the other side and is run, through a shutoff valve for some reason, to the bottom of the carb (I guess, it's not here for me too look at to be sure.) I was told that there shouldn't be any reason to have the shutoff valve there so I figure, pull it off, that'll stop the oil leak so close to the wires and stop the new wires from getting messed up but the thing is, should there be oil in that line in the first place? Especially if it's running to the intake or the bottom of the carb or wherever without a filter like the other side has? (they need a little smiley scratching his head....LOL) Thanx guys!
