yes 5.0 reffers to 5 liters and the 302 is cubic inches. although it is not exactly 302, ford likes round numbers.

Its a good question, took a while for it to sink in with me also. once you learn stats its easy to remember. 5.8liter is 351 cubic inches and so on.

Is there a formula to convert one to the other and vice versa?

Here you go........
5 liter = 305.1187192 cubic inch
1 liter = 61.0237438 cubic inch

1 cubic inch = 0.0163871 liter
302 cubic inch = 4.9488933 liter

You can click on this link for the conversion chart I used.

What makes that interesting is if you were to round off both the exact "literage" for both the 300 and the 302 they should both be 4.9L engines. I guess ford should have thought a little better when they made these 2 engines so close in size.

Since the 302 is a derivative of the original 289 the CID numbers were upped to sound "bigger" when the shift to the 302 over the 289 was implemented.

I still miss my 7.7 litre Cadi once in a while.
