I have a '00 Astro and love it. My wife hauls the family to church so we don't put many miles on ours. I can't really tell you about how reliable it is cause we haven't had many problems. Most are cosmetic and with kids that's expected. The vortec v6 is nice on power but haven't really paid attention to actual fuel economy. I like how it sits higher than most mini-vans out there and actually feels like a van. I also wanted rear wheel drive with a full frame. Little did I know til I looked under it that it's sub framed
It tows the pop-up camper very nicely. I think I'd go back Astro if I had to buy another. This one will be paid off next august
Just had to weight in. I have had 5 extended Aerostars, both RWD and AWD. I love them because of the amount of room inside. I do a lot of driving and hauling, and I can get about as much inside as others do with their full size vans. The 4.0L gets great mileage on the road (usually about 18 – 20 mpg) and is still has plenty of power. I have pushed all of them over 350K miles when the transmissions gave out, except one that was rear-ended. They are not expensive to buy and really don't a need lot of maintenance. The biggest drawback is that no one likes to work on the suckers! You can just see mechanics swearing under their breath when you pull in with one and your bill will be higher than some other vehicles.
Some day I will have switch to something else because it is getting harder to fine a decent one. Just don't know what I'll switch to, maybe an Astro because it has a good engine but it will be difficult to give up my Areostars.
