hi i am gonna put a edelbrock carb. in by stock 400 engine and want to know if a 750 CFM would be to big for it, would a 600 CFM be better???? another thing is i need a cast iron intake manifold not a aluminum otherwise they will bump me up to the next class in the mud reaces i just want to know where i can buy a new one cuase i cant =find em in magazines......all help is apreciated thanks kevin
From what I understand and have found to be correct is that the 351M/400 never came with a factory 4bbl engine(so no factory cast 4V intake) and, the 351C will not bolt on. If you have a cutting torch you could cut the old intake to accept the carb.
Normally, the 600cfm would be the perfect choice for your engine....but you mentioned that you are racing it. Is this engine stock? I ask because if its built pretty hot a 750 would work...but only if its real hot. Finally.....why an edelbrock? I know its kind of a ford/chevy thing, but when it comes to racing its a fact that Holleys squeeze out more horse. Edel doesn't make a double pumper and thats what you would want to race with anyways. Just some thoughts.
yeah the only prob. is in sportsman class i can not have double pumpers or else they will bump me to the next class which i wont stand a chance in but does anyone know if they make new cast iron intake manifolds for 4 barrel carbs.?
i also cant have aluminum intakes so if anyone can please give me info. on intakes made for 400's and if you can get cast ones yet it is very much apreciated thanks a lot kevin
No cast iron 4V intakes were made or available for a 400.
About the best you could do would be to custom make a 4V to 2V adaptor plate and machine out the factory 2V carb openings some. Keep the plenums split apart for street but you could machine out the center divider in a stock manifold for racing.
There could be a cast iron 4V out there from some factory engineering prototype but it would be worth thousands of dollars as a collectors item. I have been around a long time and I have never seen a cast iron 4V manifold for a 400 nor have I ever met anyone that had one. From all indications and all of the books and manuals I have they are a mythical beast. If anyone has one they could charge admission to see it.
>Can you get away with using a 351C manifold with the spacers

A 351C 4V manifold would have ports to match 4V Cleveland heads. You would need the proper adaptors and 4V heads if you go that way. The stock heads on a 351M or 400 have the 2V intake ports and you would need the proper adaptors for the 2V pattern. As far as I know these adaptors are not being made any more and you would have to find them used. The adaptors were also aluminum and may violate your rules. The 2V and 4V intake head ports were quite different. You may want to get a book called "Ford Performance" by Pat Ganahl available from many places. The info on the 400 is quite dated even in the revised edition. More information is available in a tech article on this website. The author of that article is working on an update also.
