470CFM on a 351?

Hey guys, I'm wondering, would a 470CFM holley carb perform ok on a 351 engine? I don't see why it wouldn't, as a CFM calculator says only 483CFM is needed at redline. And it came with a 350cfm 2 barrel originally.

I've got a 600 on it now, it's too big. Lots of power, but it sucks gas and doesn't perform ideally.

The Holley truck avenger 470 looks like a great option.

It should work.

But that 600 probably needs to be tuned. Unlike an Edelbrock that performs pretty good right out of the box I've never had a Holley that didn't perform better with some extra work.

When I ran my stock cars with Clevelands I ran a 650 DP with a 6500 RPM redline.

Actually, I contacted holley about it to give me the details. This is what they told me.

Thanks for writing Holley Performance. The Truck Avenger is a little bit of a different beast. The 470 will not work on anything but a V6 engine. Even thought the CFM is enough it just does not flow the same. And they are set up to run only in off road situations giving high torque at low rpm. They have no high speed circuit in the carb so fuel economy would be awful.

As far as a recommendation I would go with the 0-80570 570 Street Avenger (0-81570 if you want to stay with the mechanical choke). Will still give you everything that you are looking for with the better fuel economy due to the vacuum secondaries. Your engine size and RPM is calling for around 557 CFM using the formula ( [engine size X Max RPM]/3456= CFM NEEDED) This would be perfect for your needs.

So I ordered up one of those suckers instead.

Thanks for posting that 351Cleveland C4!

That's actually why I've gravitated away from the Truck Avenger for my current build. If I do enough off roading in the Bronco, I may reconsider, or just do an EAfI swap.

For a 351 there is no way I'd use anything smaller than 600 CFM, just my opinion.

600 is a great size for power, but I don't ever rev above 5200 and I'm more into the economy side of the game. I drive my truck everywhere so every bit helps.

Sorry for going slightly off topic, but what **** are they on about? CFM IS flow, surely?

They are talking about the fuel metering circuits. There is no cruise circuit in that carb. Only power. It will flow 470, but it is fueling hard all the way.

I can buy that, it's designed for low range torque only and not a wide rpm range.
As well as the rest of the advise.
But surely cfm (cubic feet per minute) must be a measure of flow through the carburator, so pretty much they said "although it definetly flows enough the problem is that it simply doesn't flow enough".
