Can any tell me what the MAF sensor does. I'm not getting any codes but my truck runs very rich at idle and on steep hills..I once installed an air intake and the check engine light came on.I brought it the service guy at my dealer and he scanned the code..It said too much mass air..I then removed the air intake and put back the stock system..My friend with the same truck same year installed a air intake and he has no problems and no codes..I was wondering if my Maf is a bit wacky LOL..I recently plugged a scangauge tool into my OBII port..The intake air temp read much warmer than the outside temperature....I brought the truck to my dealer several times asking to change some sensors and they won't..No codes, No change
The Mass Airflow Sensor utilizes a PCM controlled "Hot" wire that
when subject to air mass being moved through/over it by varying throttle applications/angles ect. cools/heats this wire and returns a signal/feedback voltage that helps the PCM to calculate/trim fuel delivery..

Thanks for the reply..Could it be possible that the calibrations in my MAF sensor are a bit on the rich side....Like i said before my friends 05 truck doesn't have the problems i have..No smoke, no codes..just runs great..Today i purchased a new maf sensor from ford. I didn't install it yet...They wouldn't cover it under warranty at least not yet..If it corrects my problem maybe i'll have a case...
The Maf on a 6.0 is used to calculates air flow for egr monitor only, not for fuel delivery and timing. one of the iat sensors is in the maf and is used to control timing and fuel delivery on cold start. there is another iat sensor at the intake that will read alot hotter than ambient temp.
xtrm1stang,. My truck seems to dump alot of smoke pouring out of the pipe during the first 1/2 hour of running, in drive standing still and especially stopping on an incline or on a hill..It also starts to smell real bad if i idle it more than 5 minutes..almost like a gas worked engine loading up...Ford still says no codes theres nothing wrong with your truck..
My friends truck is the same year, he's doesn't smoke at all..in fact when he's truck idles its quieter than mine he's almost sounds like a gas engine...I'm stumped....
Would you know what causes the truck to idle rich and cause massive smoking...
any help would be appreciated...I'm determined to find the problem and fix it even though its under warranty
xtrm1stang is right.. I was speaking in generalities on MAF units..
For the 6.0, the MAF sensor supplies a return analogvoltage signal to the PCM proportional to the intake air mass/throttle angles. The MAF sensor uses a hot (actually two, one is a cold wire) wire to measure the volumn of intake air thats entered the engine through the sensor. As well as a iat sensor in the MAF sensor.. The wire is maintained at 200 degrees 'above' ambient temperature. Air passes over the hot wire cooling the wire ect. and the current required to maintain the temperature of the wire should be proportional to the air mass flow. This MAF signal is then used to calculate the exhaust gas recirculation..
My thinking was that a reading/code for to much MAF might cause too much EGR flow causing excessive smoke..

update on new sensor installation...I installed my new maf sensor...I noticed several changes...No more squelling noise from turbo, ??? over 3000 rpms..More power at normal driving, little to no smoke on hills(check my other posts)...intake airtemp close to outside air while driving..so far so good.....I'm going to have my dealer send the old maf sensor back to ford..hopefully i'll get a refund
