I have a problem that has been bothering me with my brakes. Sometimes when I push the brakes I get a wicked shudder and sometimes I don't get any shudder at all. I have just had the front rotors turned, a new caliper on the right hand front, all new Bendix Titanium metallic pads on all 4. It started doing this a couple months ago and I haven't really had any time to do anything with it until lately, but everything that I have replaced or checked seems to not make any difference. If anyone has any ideas that would be great as I don't really want to take it to the stealership and pay them to just start replacing parts until they find the problem.
Thanks.
There is very little play in any of the steering linkage and the balljoints are tight. Also the wheel bearings still feel good, I had the hub assembly off last weekend and replaced the spindle bearings and did a good check over on just about everything that I can think of.
Do you feel it in the steering wheel or in the pedal?
If it is in the steering, it is coming from the front end and may be caused by the toe being too far out. Also, you only replaced one caliper. These should be replaced in pairs, like the rotors and pads.
If you feel it in the pedal, your antilock is reacting to something that is not up to spec. Are both rotors the same thickness. The antilock will sense this and try to compensate, ie: shudder.
I'm not sure how bad the shudder is, but try rotating the tires. Front to back, back to front. I had a side wall problem with a front tire and it gave me a weird feel when braking or turning. Especially when I had a load on the truck.
I can feel the shudder in the truck itself, but also in the steering wheel. i will replace the other front caliper, I didn't know that they had to be replaced in pairs. What really gets me about it is that it only does it when it wants to. It takes me about 30 minutes to get to work and when its cold I don't feel it but half way there I can feel it and then all of the sudden it is gone again. The slid pins seem to be ok front and back. Thats why I question what it can be. Would a flex line to the front do thsi?
Thanks fro all the responses, I'm sure that with the help that I have been getting that I can resolve this.

If u find the problem, please post it,as i have the same problem.I know my ball joints are bad and im going to change them this weekend.
It is doubful that the cause is a flex line, but would not hurt to check. With the shudder in both places, and only happening once in a while, i think you are feeling the antilock. Mic both front rotors and it would not hurt to check the rears. All it takes is for one to be out of round. I would definately look at the rear at this point because of the body shudder.
I had the same problem and so turned all 4 rotors and replaced both front calipers, new pads in front. It was ok for a couple of months then slowly came back again. Checked with one of the mecs at work and he said they don't even bother turning the rotors on the fords cause they are marginal at best when new. He suggested either power slots or cross drilled rotors. I did that all 4 with new Hawk pads and all has been great since, around 2000 miles.Hope this helps. LPR
ps: mine is an early 99' pre march 15, 1999. So the rotors are 95 mm instead of 105mm.
