Both pumps still draw from the lower hose and push the coolant through the block up through the intake and then back out the upper hose to the radiator. Depending on what direction the water pump impeller turns is important. If the serpentine pump turns CCW versus CW for the older belt driven one you need to match the pump with the type of belt system. You will definitely have a problem using the wrong pump because of the direction of the impeller vanes relative to pumping action.

i see what you mean so if i have a serpentine system which way should the belt be pushing the pump im gessing if the system isnt hooked up right wont that cause the pump not to suck up the water?

I don't have a serpentine belt schematic for the 302 but you need to know which way the waterpump pulley needs to rotate based on what impellor is in the pump either with the crank pulley which is CW or opposite which is CCW. If you check with Autozone, Ford or NAPA they should be able to tell you whcih way the water pump needs to rotate. Maybe someone on here can tell you.
