Cool Bad Vibration

Guys I need some help. I have a 01 Powerstroke Crew Cab 4x4. When I'm driving, especially pulling a load, when I hit about 55mph and the trans shifts back down to 1400-1500 rpm there is a severe shake in the steering wheel. It's almost like a V-8 runnign on 7 cylinders. My acceleration during this vibration is very poor. When I'm running about 70mph and the rpms are at about 2000-2100 you hardly notice it. I have changed the fuel filter and it didn't change a thing. I have noticed there is a little play in the rear driveshaft to differential u-joint as well as a considerable amount of backlash on the rear yolk. Do you think this is what causes the vibration and if so does it make sense that it is more noticeable at certain rpm levels. It seems as though the tranny is shifting down to low from a power standpoint but yet the rpms seems about right. What do you guys think???

Without having the s.o.p. feel it's tough to say. Yes rpm can make a difference. You need to determine if it is driveline or engine. My guess would be driveline.

I will have to check the tranny fluid. The truck has 112,000 on it.

01 PSD, could the shake be from front end problems? I had a severe shake at about 55 when my front tires were going bad. Didn't always do it. New tires all around and front end alignment, no problems since. I don't remember an acceleration problem because I was more worried about the shake.

Question

I've been wondering, do you guys think it could be a bad torque converter? The reason that I ask is that the vibration seems to be worst while under load. If it were u-joints or driveshaft wouldn't it be obvious at all levels?

Could be both if you have a lot of slop in the driveline.
Also when it's doggin' it does it sound like the engine is missing?

Have you checked to see if the transfer case and front hubs are free?

The engine doesn't sound like it's missing but the truck shakes like it is. The hubs and transfer case are free.

There shouldn't be any play in a u-joint. You might want to drop the driveshaft, and check the u-joints and center support bearing.

Have you pulled any codes? Try thiis and see what you have to begin with. Maybe a baseline.

I remember having a serious vibration problem in my 02 F350 when hitting around 50 - 55mph.. the problem was due to a busted U-Joint barley hanging together in the drive shaft!

My 99' PSD is doing exactly the same thing. Did you find any resolution?

I have recently read on another forum, that the nut on the output flange for the transfer case can come loose causing a vibration. Something else to consider.
