Guys I need some help. I have a 01 Powerstroke Crew Cab 4x4. When I'm driving, especially pulling a load, when I hit about 55mph and the trans shifts back down to 1400-1500 rpm there is a severe shake in the steering wheel. It's almost like a V-8 runnign on 7 cylinders. My acceleration during this vibration is very poor. When I'm running about 70mph and the rpms are at about 2000-2100 you hardly notice it. I have changed the fuel filter and it didn't change a thing. I have noticed there is a little play in the rear driveshaft to differential u-joint as well as a considerable amount of backlash on the rear yolk. Do you think this is what causes the vibration and if so does it make sense that it is more noticeable at certain rpm levels. It seems as though the tranny is shifting down to low from a power standpoint but yet the rpms seems about right. What do you guys think???
My 99 PSD is having the same problems. Did you ever figure out what your problem was?
Thanks,
jbracken
I have not found a resolution yet. I've been terribly busy and it has been getting put off. The idea of bearings in the front end seems to make sense. I'm going to check that as well as the possibility of a loose nut. I'll let you know what I find out.

If the driveline flange retainer nut really is loose, then I highly recommend that you park it until you can get some time to look at it. The parts working against each other will wear themselves out and then you will find that you have to replace/rebuild the transfer case as well.
Did you ever resolve this problem? I am having a similar problem, cleaned turbo and new o rings, then new crank sensor, then new front brakes ( the works with power slot and hawks), today new tires all around. So far about $2K and still the vibration. Mine starts out right away around 10 MPH and goes away around 60.
I read somewhere that the nut that holds the flange on the transfer case can come loose causing a vibration also. I tried to check mine but needed a socket larger than what I had. I think it will take a 22mm socket. You might want to mark the driveshaft for orentation and remove it to inspect the u-joints. While you have it out check the flange nuts on both the transfer case and the pinion.

Ditto on the loose flange.
The socket is way bigger than that. I'm at home right now and I can't remember the exact size but it's somewhere around 1 1/2" .
The one going to the front driveshaft is a little smaller.
