Vitamins?

How many of you take any kind of supplemental vitamins? My wife suggested I try some kind of multivitamin when she became pregnant and started studying all kinds of health stuff and decided for me that I needed some. I have been taking Centrum Complete for 2 months now and noticed that my finger nails and hair is growing at an alarming rate but besides that I feel more energized and just all around feel better. I am starting to think that my wife may be on to something here.

You might also want to check out the virtues of Omega 3. They are just starting to find out all that it is good for. I used to have high blood pressure, 150/100. It is now normal after taking the Omega 3. It took about 3 months taking my usual BP meds and the Omega 3 to start having low BP problems. I was removed by my doctor from the BP meds and he still doesn't know. And I'm not telling. Might want to give this site a good read. I am not necessarily endorsing anything there, just good healthy reading.

Check out the right side bar on cod liver oil (high in omegas) and about statin drugs for those on stuff like Lipitor. Also, check out the cold remedies. I wasn't aware that you catch the flu via your ears. I always thought it was thru the nose or mouth.

As a fellow HBP pill taker, I would love to get away from those pills too. ( they are really bad for natures salute) ...

Are those Omegas prescription or on the shelf , Flash ? Any reactions when taking the BP pills and the Omegas at the same time ?

I certainly notice a difference when I take a daily vitamin, like Centrum.

However, I think that's the B12 in it - B12 by itself at the same dosage has the same effect on me, so at least the B12 (and the rest of the B's) do help the energy level.

I have a big problem staying on any sort of regimen for any length of time, within a week or two, I start forgetting to take the darn things...

I have some bad psoriasis on my legs, and am taking the vitamins (and some zinc which helps slightly) reguarly lately for the last 3-4 months... Just need a reason

Heard good things about Omega 3 too...

Other than that, I wouldn't put much stock in all the other "natural" supplements...

Thanks Flash!! That was a great read, I sent the link to my little brother, he is one of those "nuts". He has been telling me about fish oil and the omega 3 beneifits of that. I think I will pick up a bottle of either that or cod liver oil next time I go to the store.

Greg, I take the Rexall brand Omega 3 that is available over the counter at Walmart. It costs around $8.00 for 120 gelcaps. There is no contraindications taking it with any prescription drugs unless you are allergic to fish, flax, or cottonseed. Since I have studied for the last 5 years home remedies( my little bro has lyme disease), I have come to the conclusion that the drug companies are charging us for something that is already available in nature and has few, if any, side effects. Take cardiomyopthia, folks die from it daily. It is nothing more than a selenium deficiency and can be cured by taking a selenium suppliment. But the drug companies can't make big money by selling you a simple suppliment. Might also want to read about the statins at this site. Seems that Sweden has the highest cholestrol count in world. They also have the lowest heart attack rate. Is that the info you got from your doctor? I bet not. They don't call them "practicing" physicians for nothing. I just know they can practice on somebody else. Again, follow your own intelligence on home remedies, they sure work at my house.

I take vitamins on a daily basis and while I'm not going to say that they can cure all ills I will say that as a general rule I feel better, have more energy, and stay healthy. If I run out of them and go a week before I get to the store or order them off of the internet I usually end up with a cold, don't ask me why but it never fails.

Vitamins and suppliments work. Get the good ones which are standardized (always have the same amount in each pill). I have no side affects. I take omega 3 as well. It lowered my cholesterol 70 points so far. And a lot of other good results too. Go to a book store and read up on things. There are a lot of natural remedies.

Take vitamins? Why? Eating too much of the wrong foods? Change your eating habits.

Do you also put additives in your gas? A lot of people do and swear it does wonders for the vehicle's performance. There are studies out for just about everything. For and against. All depends on who did it.

Mega bucks involved.

I take a Centrum everyday, and pretty much assume it helps. I have a bad diet, and as much as I try to change, it's just tough (5 days of work, all driving = lunch on the road, class at night = dinner at 10pm, etc) so I supplement it with a Centrum. I know there are reprecussions for taking supplements depending on your body. I once read about a guy who was drinking Slim Fast shakes everyday, was in tip-top shape, and then out of the blue, passed. They say it had something to do with the shakes and something else he was taking...they were jacking up the levels of Vitamin K and had an adverse affect on his blood and heart. If you're not sure, I'd ask the doctor next time you're in there, but I think a Centrum is enough, and like bumpzter said, check on what yuo can do about your diet.

I have no argument with your comments, but in this day of processed foods, how can you know your diet is providing all you need? I eat a balanced diet but I spend just pennies a day on a multi vitamin and Omega-3. If all it does is increase the cost of my urine, that's OK. As for studies, I don't need them. I know that at 71 I can still do a day's work and run 2 miles three days a week. I don't buy additives for my truck, but if the engine dies, I can just buy another one. If my body's engine dies, I don't get a second shot. I wish you good health.

Alot of these studies are sponsored by the vitamin industry.

As dono stated, your'e pissing most of the vitamins away.

If you think it helps, then by all means take them.

All you need is a balanced diet, exercise and plenty of water.

Of course that's easier said then done.

Not all the vitamins are "urinated" away - the water-soluable ones are, but the fat-soluable ones come out the #2 hole

One thing I've noticed - years ago, I'd take a vitamin C in preperation for a cold... urine was bright green ... now I do the same thing, same dosage, no green... that means I really needed that vitamin... (or, my kidneys aren't doing anything, but we won't go there )

The thing is, if you're urinating strange colors, that means your body is already "topped off" with that particular vitamin... only the excess is excreted.

I look at it this way: It can't hurt, and does in fact help lots of people.

"Natural supplements" are another matter entirely ... I wouldn't touch most of that with a 10-foot pole, except maybe Omega 3, which has been documented to do something...
