1974 EGR Question

I am trying to get my 1974 F250 ready For a Smog test in California. I have come up with all of the required emission control devices except for the EGR valve. I know what an EGR looks like on a modern vehicle, but I can't find anything resembling EGR on this truck. What does an EGR look like on a 1974 360/390? Anybody have any pictures or diagrams?

1974 EGR Question

My 76 390 doesn't have one. It was originally a Texas truck so that might have something to do with it. Also it is an F-150. Your's might not have one.

1974 EGR Question

If you have a factory intake manifold, there will be a metal 'spacer' between the carb and the manifold, this is the egr plate and the egr valve fits on the back, it is just a diaphram/vacuum activated valve. I was able to get a new egr vavle at autozone for a '76 with a 360. If you have the carb id number(not model number), the one stamped on a little piece of aluminum on the top of the carb, it is easier to look up.

1974 EGR Question

If I have a factory intake manifold without EGR, can I just replace it with an EGR type manifold? The original 360 in this truck was replaced with an apparently pre-1974 390. Also does anyone know where I can get a vacuum diagram or a service manual for this truck? Thank you for all the info and help, this is a really great forum/web site.

1974 EGR Question

The VECI label will mention if it should have an EGR valve and possibly Cats...just pray the label doesn't say anything about CA. The plumbing is way more involved than for the federal engines. Post the calibration number & Dennis can probably help with coming up with a vacuum circuit.

Hello DHH. Welcome. I believe this site sells service manuals for your truck. You also could try the auto parts stores or a book store. I found the manual for my truck left a lot to be desired in the vacuum dept. I found a lot of what I needed at the library. Lots of good tech. manuals that show smog componets and vacuum routing for different yrs. You might want to check this out. www.smogcheck.com
Click on smog laws in upper right corner. Scroll down to bottom and click on "engine changes". This will take you to the California Bureau of Automotive Repair web site. Lots of information on CA. smog laws, modifications and testing requirments. Hope this helps.

Edit: BTW, did you just buy your truck and are getting a change of ownership?

1974 EGR Question

The truck was just given to me by a homeowners group that I work for on the weekends. They used it as a snowplow/ road maintenace truck. According to my research, a CA F250 with a 360 or a 390 has to have a "ported EGR valve system". I found this info in a MOTORS Emission Control Manual. My VECI label is long gone. A friend I work with told me he can get me a 360 EGR type intake manifold for $25. Do all the intakes have the exhaust crossover in them? If they do, I should be able to get the EGR intake and an EGR valve and make this engine "smoggable". Otherwise, I guess I can wait until 2004 when it should become smog exempt, unless the enviro-whackos change the laws!!

1974 EGR Question

Wait a minuite. Are you sure it was origianaly built as a CA truck? Like I said mine was sold new in TX. As such it didn't need EGR. However I was able to smog it 3 times with no problems in CA. And the guy I bought it from had been living in CA for a while also. I guess I would take the vin (or the truck) down to the smog station and ask some questions and find out what it needs. Might save you some time and money.

1974 EGR Question

DHH-

I agree that you should ask a few more questions before you proceed. As far as manifolds go, any 360 egr intake will work, but, to complicate things, not all 390 heads have EGR ports and older 360/390 intakes don't have egr crossovers. I don't know the exact years all of these were available.

Remember, you will actually need three parts, the intake, the egr valve, and the egr spacer that the valve bolts to. I suggest you find out for sure what you are required to do to your truck and then repost this question in the FE/360/390...engine forum. The FE gurus over there will be able to tell you what parts will fit, match, and function best. Good Luck.

Jayson

1974 EGR Question

Well, I called a few Smog Check stations this afternoon and finally on my last call found someone who was willing to answer some of my questions. He told me the same thing all of you are telling me, that some of these trucks were not originally equipped with EGR. He told me that if it is not there, then he would assume that it is not supposed to be there. Needless to say, he is going to get my business as soon as I can get another moving permit from DMV. I do have one more quick question though. There is mention here,in a previous post, and the smog tech I talked to mentioned a calibration number. Where can I find this number? Thanks again for all the help. I'm sure I will need plenty more help as I continue to try to restore this truck.
