The term half ton, 3/4 ton and 1 ton go back many years to when trucks had the rather small payload of their names.
Now a F150 is a half ton, The F250 is a 3/4 ton and the F350 is a 1 Ton.
All these models have a legal payload well over their namesake and the capability to haul easily over their legal payload. Most 1 tons have a legal payload of 2 tons and will haul 3 tons without much of a grunt.
Toyota a few years ago called one of their toy trucks a 1 ton because it supposably had a 2000 pound payload. This was a joke and Ford did not take the bait and start misrepresenting truck names as we have known them for over 60 years.
Toyota stopped doing this but many salesmen will mislead their customers. A friend of mine bought a Nissan Titan and says to me, " I'm sure it is a 3/4 ton."
I say, sorry, the Titan competes with the F150 and both are half ton pickups.
