Question about Microsoft buisness practices

I was reading how RealNetworks & Microsoft had settled their court problems. Real was upset, for the same reason that Netscape used to be upset, about how Microsoft would only include their products in Windows. According to Real, if Windows Media Player was not included in Windows then the Real player would have a better chance in a competitive market.

I do not understand how anyone can force Microsoft to include it's competitors software in it's products. To me it would be like Chip Foose filing a lawsuit against Ford because Ford only put Ford rims on their F-150's and didn't give an option for Foose rims.

Am I missing something?

Well, Microsoft is incredibly successful. That's the problem. In today's society, at least in North America, anything successful has to be taken to court. Mega millions have been spent suing MS.

The real problem wasn't that Microsoft wouldn't include a competitor's product, but that Windows had hooks in it to discourage the end user from those products. For example - Windows XP - Internet Explorer comes preloaded. Really screws up the end user wanting to run Netscape. In some versions of Windows, IE would overwrite Netscape if used, rendering Netscape unusable until re-installed. Can't recall right offhand the other horror stories of conflict between the two right now, but google "browser wars" for insight.

And Guess What - YOU CAN'T UNINSTALL IE in Windows XP!

And XP has a number of idiotic "can't do that" things......

Can you tell I'm a Windows fan? Sorry, but you asked ....

I'm not a Microsoft fan either, I was just curious as to the insights of other FTEers.

I used to be real big into computer but have really lost interest. The only thing I do anymore really is just hit message boards and check my e-mail. One day though, when I do have to buy a new computer, I will defenitly to buying an Apple.
