Does anyone know how to flush the transmission on the A4LD transmission with out taking it to a tranmission shop. I would like to be able to do this myself. Any help is appreciated.
1) Mark a bucket at the 1 gallon level
2) Disconnect the tranny cooling lines at the radiator
3) Start the motor and run till 1 gallon is pumped out
4) Add 1 gallon of new ATF (ONLY Mercon V if that's what is called for)
5) Repeat steps #3, and #4, stopping after the 3rd gallon is pumped out
6) Drop tranny pan, replace filter. Be very careful to clean everything well, and only use "lint free" cleaning cloths!!
7) Install tranny pan, and cooling lines
8) Add 1 gallon, plus any more required to bring the tranny level up to the proper level. Make sure you check the level hot, DO NOT overfill.
DO NOT use any multi-purpose synthetic ATF, like Amsoil!!!!!!!
I would consider it a blessing that you can't get Amsoil products in the UK!!
Watchout for the deceit, and lies on the Amsoil website! They try and make you think that all their motor oil products are API certified, in reality only a few are API certified.
98 Explorer ATF
I know this is an old discussion but the reply from Bob Ayres has made me think. Ford has told us to use nothing but Mercon V in transmissions newer than '96. But this is not available in the UK even from Ford! Last year I flushed and filled my 5R55E with 76 Mercon V, which is all I can get in the UK.
First question, is this OK?
Second, can anyone suggest anything else?
Great site!

Thanks 98XLT. No they don't sell Mercon V. I can get 76 Mercon V from some one who import it in large quantities and that's what I use. Is 76 Mercon V any good?
76 Mercon V is fine it is made by 76 lubricants it meets the specs for mercon v it is a semi synthetic fluid . it will work fine in your application and any other that requires mercon v.
