before changing out my DP to 4in. is it advisable to put on a new v-clamp? reason i ask it is a far cry from hear to get one. are there any tell tale signs or past experiences with this sort of thing before i get started? hate to start something i cant finish. oh,what would i use for a butt joint besides welding? am going from 4in.with welded on 3.5 reducer. 3.5 to 3.5 butt joint. bandclamp?
Depends on the condition of the existing clamp. I reused mine, it was in perfect condition. They are just stubborn to remove, they can get themselves seated down real tight. The way that I dislodged mine was to apply Free all and then some gentle persuation with a drift punch on the side of the clamp in the direction of removal. It popped right off.
The only time that clamp would need replacing, other than you twisted it all up, would be if it tightened up so far that the ends pull together. At that point the clamp has stretched beyond it's usable means, but normally it would have to be torqued many times before reaching that point.
i put a crowbar on mine and LIGHTLY tapped on that with a hammer... it came off easily.. and i have almost 96k on my mule.. so that clamp had been on there awhile...
