Ok guys.. I have this 77 LTD2 wagon.. And Im really concidering ripping the 351M400 out and its C6 tranny.. I know where to get the mounts.. What I want to know is is there anything I should know befor hand.. IE like putting he engine off center.. Or if someone know what drive shaft will swap right out.. Im sticting with the stock strearing, front end. Just adding a few extra leafs for the weigh..
And info on what U have run into will be helpfull..
And I know the 352M400 not a hi pro engine.. But she been reliyable for the 10 years I have had it.. And she was rebuilt last year..
I am planning on ripping out the AC that with the wagon, And anything else I think I can bolt on..
If you use one of those tubular crossmembers with motor mounts it will mount the engine up high enough to clear the tie rod, steering box etc. I have used the transmission mounts from an Aerostar for the rear with good results LOL
I put the same engine/trans unit into a 1959 Ranchero years ago. It wasnt a race car but a strong reliable every day driver. The old engine just wouldnt quit. Iput it in with 130K on it without touching it (I was broke) I ran it hard for years with the bottom end so loose that it really rattled at highway speeds.
Make sure you get all the componentry for the electronic ignition. Heck, strip as much off of the donor that you can, even if you think you might not ever use it. You will be surprised on what you may need after you all the old hulk away.
Measure everything about 18 thousand times, and then....
...measure it again
I'm in the process of adding that same setup into my 52 F-3. Pulled mine out of a 79 F-150 (400M/C-6). I haven't gotten it permanenty in the frame, but I did get things set up. Its going to be some close spaces, but it will fit. I have a link to a few pictures below. Hope they may be of help.
Thats good to hear.. I was worred that no one had done this swap.. Im getting all the mounts from Sac Vin Ford and Hoping that the enging/tranny are with in a in of the same length as the inline 4 and T98 tranny.. Maybe than I wont need a new drive shaft..
I pulled my tranny and motor from a similar year Mercury wagon and just by luck, the Mercury rear drive shaft was a PERFECT fit. All I had to do was clean, paint and replace the Ujoints. My engine is a 302 and the tranny is an AOD. Don't know how all that compares to a C6, but who knows, maybe you'll get lucky too.
I was reading Bobbytnm's post about saving what you can off the donor vehicle...and I figured saving the rear axle would be safe bet...atleast sell it. Bummer about the 223.
Mad,
Its a never ending cylce. It seems like once you start modifying and making more power then you start the game of chasing the weak link, constantly making each new component heavier/racier/etc
I have a brother-in-law trapped in this vicious cycle withhis mega rock crawler jeep.
Good luck with the swap. I'm very sorry to hear of the demise of your trusty 6
