I know there is a 460 message board, but there seems to be more action here and I know a number of you are running 460's. I just bought a 1977 F-150 4x4 with a 460 and a 750 edelbrock. The truck had been repo'd so I don't have much history on it although I am sure the engine is not stock. My understanding is that it is best for the engine to run a PVC valve, but when I hook up a PVC valve the truck won't even idle. If I just connect the large vacuum port off of the carb to an elbow on the valve cover it runs fairly good. It seems to me that to run it open like that is just like having one huge vacuum leak. My questions are 1) is it ok to run it with out a PVC valve, 2) Why won't it idle if I install a PVC valve and 3) why isn't it like having a vacuum leak.
I appologize for the length of this post and I really appreciate all of your help.
Thanks,
Terry
If you run a PVC valve connected to a vacuum source you need to make sure you don't have a vent connected to any valve covers. What you end up with is a big vacuum leak.
It is ok to just run vented oil cap. The real reason behind PVC valves was emissions.
