On my 86, the from the air filter box there is a tube that runs to the radiator support.. on the front of it is a metal plate that seems to block the air. If i removed this, would it force any air in at highway speeds? also would water get in the engine if it rained?
I guess I can let you know in a few months. I just took that piece off of mine and then also ran a second hose to the other hole just like it that is behind the headlight shroud. I blended the two hoses together with "Y" sewer pipe that was an exact fit. The "Y" isn't even but like a straight pipe then a second inlet at a 45 degree angle to it. It fit perfect. I am still putting my truck together so I haven't had the time to take it out on the freeway and open her up yet but I figure it HAS to help. I did put some wire mesh over the the inlet where that blocker plate was to filter out the larger bugs and stuff.
I have a second air box as well but haven't figured out where to put it or how to route the hoses. I wanted to put it on the passenger side where there is another rectangular air inlet like the driver's side stock one but there isn't any room for an airbox there with the battery, relay box, heater valves etc. SO far, I am leaning towards putting it on teh driver side wheel well and then ducting the air over. I just have to then figure out how to "Y" into the throttle body.
I don't trust those K7N filters with the larger holes in the filter. I would just like to double the surface area with dual stock filters and also double that restrictive plumbing from the front of the grill to the throttle body. I put headers on to get air out, I just need a better way to get air in now.
For what it's worth, it does seem to run better up to about 45 MPH that I have drove so far. Hopefully I will get it on the highway soon. I had a driveshaft custom made and it is about 3/4 inch too long and stressing my u-joints so I have to take it back and have them shorten it a bit before I will trust it at highway speeds.
