I picked up an '88 F150 back in june, and have been monitoring the motor since, its noisy on start-up, and quiets down after it reaches operating temp
but i got noise coming from the timing gear area, thought at first it could be the water pump, but i'm starting to drift away from that thought now.
I got a 2 inch folder full of work receipts done to the truck since 1988, and found a work order for timing gear and chain replacement back in '01,
question #1: could the timing gears go after only 4 years?
Its got the duraspark 3 dist in it as well, which seems to control the spark advance by computer on acceleration/decellerating,
question #2: could the mechanism in the distributor/computer lose its acuracy after time and leave the distributor sloppy and slightly out of time? I know it doesnt have the internals of earlier distributors.
question #3: could the drive gears, or shaft of the oil pump make noise come from the front of the block?
I just tryin to prevent denting in the hood of the truck from me bangin my head against it tryin to figger this out....
