what fuel mileage would i expect from a 6.9 diesel? what about an early 7.3?
i'm looking to buy an older diesel and i'm just wondering about it.
thanks

Depends on how you intend on driving it. I have a 85 2wd supercab, 6.9, T19 4 speed (no overdrive), 4.10 gears. I can make 20-22 with no load if I don't mind driving 55 mph and have all day to get there. That goes down to 14 if I push it close to the governed RPM's at 70-75 on the interstate.
I just logged 1422.2 miles on my 1991 4X4 F350 Crew cab with a stock zf5 tranny, 4:10 diff. and a newly rebuilt 7.3 with about 4,000 miles and a rebuilt ATS non-waste gated aftermarket turbo with a modified 4" intake and 3" exhaust. These were mostly interstate miles with a couple hundred pounds of cargo and the cruise control locked on 3 different settings. The $ limit on my card kept me from getting a computation on mpg for each speed so this post combines some results of the driving.
Driving about 625 miles at about 2250 rpm and 67 mph and another 120 miles at about 2450 rpm and 72 mph plus a few miles of city and country driving towing a 5000 lb trailer required 66.115 gallons to drive 917.0 miles for an average of 13.87 mpg.
Returning the last 505.2 miles with the cruise locked on 2000 rpm for a registered speed of about 61 mph used 30.564 gal resulting in an average of 16.53 mpg.
Don't know if I have the patience to ever find out what she will do running empty at 1800 rpm on a long trip .
