What would be the best oil to use during the winter for a 97 5.4 triton? I am in central Oregon and we get snow and ice and temps down in the teens and twentys. Should I go a little thinner?
Follow Ford's recommendations for viscosity (W), and use an oil that is either a full synthetic like Mobil 1, or a semi-synthetic, which is a blend of dino oil and synthetic oil. The better low temp flow characteristics of full and semi-synthetics will do the job for you and allow oil to flow more easily through the engine when the engine and oil are cold.
I`m down in the big? smoke of Edmonton and I`m thinking of putting in that there quacker state Ive been using al summer, a 5W30.
Its been OK for towing in the mountains.
I assume it`ll be OK again this winter, as long as I remember to plug here in when it hits -40 celsius and fahrenheit! Shouldnt be long for you guys up there!
Failing that I can always light the a fire under the oilpan like they do in Russia, I ve got some left over campfire wood, just make sure that the flames dont burn the pipes (again)., oh and keep the garage door open.
Man, those frozen brakes are a pain!, but 4x4 comes into its own!
I should apologise to Hollowpoint thinking everyone in the US knows about Fort Mac and Albertas secret, ( oil reserves on a par with Saudi Arabia), check out this link,
Oh and its that high mileage quacker state wit the same fileter.
been OK so far and done about 10k of towing with the expy this summer with a 5w3o high mileage oil, I even got a free fileter from Crappy Tire when I bought it.
Ah yes the lovely Canadian winter. In the midst of moving back to Manitoba and was wondering if using a 0W-30 would be better than 5W-30. The winters in Medicine Hat are not that bad but you don't get chinooks in 'Toba so I'm thinking of going to 0w-30.
Hey there Snodgrass, that is a darn good question. I am not sure what I am going to do. I just got the Expedition a month ago. I had an Explorer for the last 2 winters and I just kept the 5W30 in it. But that was the oil that was recommended for it. But I park in a heated garage and still plug her in because it just gets THAT cold here. I have to take her in next week for a seatbelt repair and will ask what they recommend. I will let you know what they say.
Oh and I was just in Edmonton this long weekend. Nice city but I want to kill the civil engineer that has that city in knots. Got lost twice. And I lived in Toronto for 7 years and thought that city was bad to get around. Sure once you live there you figure it out, but it was murder for me. I have a new hate for traffic circles. Hahaha.
I`ve been here for about 3 years and I think the city has been growing faster than the planners can keep up with, its as bad in Calgary as well, new subdivisions everywhere.
I got the expy last fall from a guy here, and ran it on 5W30 then, and I only changed the oil in it once this year before we towed the trailer to BC through the Rockies and back, so I`m due to change it again soon. It runs OK for a seven year old motor , though I did change the shockers in Spring as the old original ones were gooey. Steers in a reasonably staight line now.
Now, if only gassing up didnt cost quite so much.....
