Hello all. It seems like a nice forum you've got here. THought I'd ask a few questions.
Currently I'm shopping for a mini-pickup.
The ranger/b-series seems to be my ticket, I can find good deals and parts seem to be cheap. Currently I'm driving a Ford Escort wagon with 150K on the clock, so Ford's done alright in my book.
I'm looking at a '94 b4000 4wd with the 4L engine. It's got 124k miles, body is in great shape, no rust on the sheetmetal, light surface rust on the frame.
I'm looking for problem areas. I know that the 4WD can be problematic, and quite frankly I'd rather just find a 2WD truck, but this B4000 is at a pretty good price.
So, lay it on me.
Common ailments of the 4.0 would be appreciated, I'd also be interested in how difficult it is to work on. Does it have a mazda brake system or a ford? The escort has mazda calipers up front and I hate doing the brakes.
Anything you guys have to offer is appreciated. I saw the Faqs about the intake manifold gaskets, and the IAC valves.
hopefully before soon I'll have my own ranger/b series and be a contributing wrenchhead around here.
I'd really like to know some more about the shift rail plugs. I'm only looking for rangers/b series with the 5sp OD tranny. I saw the tech page about it, but I'm not familiar with the trucks so I don't know where to look. Are those plugs on the top of the tranny? What's the easiest way to get a quick peek at those. I just want to see if there's been leakage, I want to make sure the tranny hasn't been run dry at some point due to neglect. Also, what's the clutch travel/feel supposed to be like? About how far should the clutch be in to disengage, and is the takeup sharp and quick or mushy on a good clutch?
Thanks
Well, I've put my search for a ranger/b series on hold. I've found a Jeep commanche that's real clean body wise and if I can get it cheap I may go that route. Who knows. The world of used cars can be crazy.
