I am at wits end here. First the specs...
'93 F-150 302 auto 2wd
Items replaced in the last 2 weeks (some today!!!)...
TPS, IAC, EGR valve, Coolant temp sensor, Air filter, and the sensor unit on the right side of the throttle body (when looking in from the front)
Symptoms...
Temp here in Joplin, MO dropped overnight on Wed into Thurs.
I went to start the truck on Thurs and it just cranked FOREVER and sputtered slightly every so often. After about 12 to 15 minutes the sputtering lasted long enough during cranking to get it to finally turn over and stay running.
Got to work and parked it until 5. Same problem when I tried to leave from work. Once I got it started it ran fine.
Same problem this morning (cold outside temp) with an added bonus... now once I got it running it idles fine, but when I give it the gas to get going it sputters and hesitates like it can't catch its breath.
I just went out and tried to start it and it is doing it again!!!
I just went out and started it (it took 5 minutes!) and once it gets running it runns at idle very smooth. When I give it gas fast it sputters hard, but if I slowly give it gas it will rev up smoothly.
Timing Chain maybe ? Hard starts sometime = timing issues. If it's getting fire/gas/air..If the timing checks out get a compression check on all the cylinders..If the timing is off and setting it in place makes it run funny it may have jumped time,, Do not drive it like this (it could be compared to milk coming out your nose).
I would try computer codes first. Very easy to do, I just did it for the first time on my 95 F150 just this week. Go to fordfuelinjection.com and do the self-test input on it. Write the codes down and then compare them to the chart. Fred
I would say your water temp sensor (the one with two wires) for the PCM is bad and your PCM thinks it’s hot all the time. This will make it very hard to start when it is cold.
This will not in most cases generate a code.
In other words it is too lean to start, it would be like starting a truck from the 70's with the choke open when it is cold.
It would have to be too lean to start. Check your fuel pressure on the fuel rail with a gauge. I think it should be 35-40 psi and I think you will find it low.
Things to check are:
1. Fuel filter
2. Fuel pressure regulator
3. Fuel pumps, you have two, one in each tank. Try the other tank
4. Clogged socks in the fuel tanks.
You may have also got some bad gas.
