Today, got a Chevy Silverado 2500 who wanted to play. He moved over pulling up to the light so we could go neck-and-neck. Duramax emblem on the side, SRW crew-cab LB. Since Chevies are lighter than Fords in the first place, I figured it was an even weight ratio (given his bed was empty and I had about 500lbs of crap in mine).
I let the light go green, and just slammed the gas. Pulled out four to five truck lengths, and kept the lead up to 90MPH. Once his turbo spooled up, he kept up just even - no shortening of the distance (no lengthening either).
It looked like a 2005 - a 2005 Durmax automatic puts out 605 ft/lbs of torque at 1600RPM ??? Or maybe even a 680ft/lbs motor - but I think it was the 605 given my lead... but maybe not. Given it's a 310 or 360HP motor, we're at least even on the HP numbers (not that I take much stock in that).
Had to be an automatic - it just kept pulling - no obvious backing-off because of a shift.
Fun nonetheless, because I wasn't looking for a race. What's even more fun is when the guy that's hot for a race gets beat.
I backed off at 90, he went sailing past - a "gimme"...
What's the standard rear gear ratio ? I think it was a 4x2 too, so more of a weight advantage...
nice going krewat! is the newest duramax actually 680 ft. lbs? wow, i think its time for a KB supercharger for my truck. after plug change this morning, it idles smoother. havent gotten on it yet. will let everyone know.
My brother-in-law bought one of those right after I bought my 2005. Both are 4x4 CC's but his just looks small. It's shorter, smaller inside etc.. Never raced him though. Funny I was riding with him once and he really got on it on a freeway onramp. It took off, but about 5 seconds later it kind of coughed and let out a big puff of black smoke. Then he let up. Never had my V10 do that....
Krewat, well done. I think any of the diesels out there have to be chipped up to really spank a V10. We could put a super charger on ours for about the extra cost of a PSD
and still beat them in a drag.
I drove a brand new 05 Cummins and a brand new 05 Duramax before I ordered my V10.
Both of them felt slow compared to my 04 F350 PSD..
The 04 PSD felt slow when I got my V10 and 9 months later I still have my BSEG.,
By the way, this is sorta tongue-in-cheek, because there's really no diesel in "stock" form that will beat a big enough gas motor... in pickups (before anyone even THINKS of starting )
I just thought it kinda interesting because HP-wise, we were even - 310 for the early '05 duramax, 310 for my '01 V10 So much for HP being the determining factor - or torque, for that matter.
Motor spin-up usually is the determining factor in lower gears - but even then, I would think once I hit 3rd, the diesel would start catching up, but it couldn't ... It did manage to match my acceleration after that four-to-five truck lengths though, so there's definitely some grunt there
the new version of the dmax is 360hp 650tq w/ 6speed allison.
its a 06 model year and is probably just getting to dealers.
the first 06's were 310hp 605tq
